TULELAKE, Siskiyou County — Residents and travelers interested in waterfowl migration, environmental education or outdoor photography can begin at the Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Visitor and Education Center near Tulelake.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists the visitor center’s regular hours as 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, with closures on December 24, 25, 31 and January 1. General entry to the refuge is free. Refuge grounds are listed as open daily from sunrise to sunset, subject to posted restrictions.
What visitors will find
The center provides interpretive displays, brochures, information about wildlife and assistance with planning outings. The broader refuge offers birding, photography, hiking and approved auto-tour options. Staff and volunteers can advise visitors on recent sightings and route conditions, but seasonal migrations and changing wetlands mean wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.
The facility is accessed from Hill Road near Tulelake; the agency provides directions on its official website. The general visitor information number is 530-667-2231.
Rules for pets and specific activities
The refuge permits dogs on a six-foot leash, and visitors must clean up after them. Hunting is regulated separately: the agency states that an applicable annual recreation pass is required for hunting on certain refuge lands, even though general refuge visits are free. Always verify specific hunting seasons and locations before arriving.
Check the refuge website before leaving for weather-related changes or special closures. The visitor-center schedule is distinct from the hours of the outdoor refuge lands.
