TULELAKE, Siskiyou County — Visitors traveling to Lava Beds National Monument should check the official cave-closure list before planning an underground excursion this fall or winter.
In conditions information updated October 16, 2026, the National Park Service identifies six caves that are closed until approximately mid-April 2027: Juniper, Hercules Leg, Sentinel, Lavabrook, Labyrinth and Sunshine. The agency explains that cave closures can occur seasonally or year-round for visitor safety and wildlife protection.
What remains important for travelers
The NPS conditions page says park roads were open when that update was posted, but it warns that roads approaching the park from the south may not be maintained during winter. Snow and road conditions can change after publication, so travelers should obtain the latest status immediately before driving.
Lava Beds also requires visitors to follow its cave-permit and bat-protection procedures. To reduce the risk of spreading white-nose syndrome, the park warns against bringing clothing or caving equipment previously used in caves or mines elsewhere. A free permit and appropriate screening are required before entering eligible caves.
A useful reminder about fire rules
Past restrictions do not necessarily remain in force. The current park conditions page says broad campground fire restrictions were lifted on September 2, 2026, but separate regulations continue to govern fires in backcountry, wilderness and caves. Consult current NPS notices instead of reusing a summer advisory.
For questions, the park lists 530-667-8113 as the visitor information number. Check the official page for new cave closures, weather and access updates.
